Disaster Preparedness for Older Adults

Older adults are often more vulnerable during natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and heatwaves. Many have limited mobility, chronic health conditions, or depend on medication and medical equipment. These factors make evacuation and recovery more difficult.

Communities can better support older adults by creating emergency plans that consider their specific needs. Regular evacuation drills, emergency contact systems, and accessible shelters can improve safety. Neighbors and volunteers can also check on older adults before, during, and after disasters.

Technology, including emergency alert systems and GPS tracking, can help emergency responders locate and assist vulnerable seniors more quickly.

In my opinion, disaster preparedness should include special support for older adults. Protecting vulnerable people during emergencies helps build stronger and more resilient communities.
